The Soft "G" Spelling Rule

In French, the letter g makes a hard sound (like 'g' in "go") before the vowels a and o. To keep it soft (like the 'g' in "mirage"), we must add a silent e before any endings starting with a or o. These spelling adjustments are highlighted in gold.

2. Regular -ER Verbs

Regular -er Verbs Conjugation Guide (by Tense)

The Rule: Drop the -er ending to find the verb stem, then add the present endings:

je -e nous -ons
tu -es vous -ez
il / elle / on -e ils / elles -ent
Key Tip:

The endings for je, tu, il/elle/on, and ils/elles are all silent in standard pronunciation. Only the nous (-ons) and vous (-ez) endings alter the sound of the spoken verb stem.

The Rule: Conjugate the auxiliary verb avoir (or être for motion/reflexive verbs) in the present tense + add the past participle ending in .

Example: j'ai changé, tu as changé...

Key Tip:

Drop the -er from the infinitive and replace it with to form the past participle (e.g., parlerparlé).

The Rule: Find the present-tense nous form, drop -ons to get the stem, then add imperfect endings:

je -ais, tu -ais, il/elle/on -ait, nous -ions, vous -iez, ils/elles -aient

Key Tip:

For verbs ending in -ger (like changer), we keep the e before any endings starting with a (e.g., je changeeais) to keep the 'g' soft.

The Rule: Present tense of aller + the full infinitive of the main verb.

Example: je vais changer, tu vas changer...

Key Tip:

The main verb does not conjugate or change spelling at all in this tense, making it highly useful for quick spoken French.

The Rule: Use the full infinitive as the stem, then add future endings:

je -ai, tu -as, il/elle/on -a, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ont

Key Tip:

The future simple stem for regular -er verbs is always the exact infinitive itself (e.g., changer-).

The Rule: Use the future stem (infinitive) + add the imperfect endings:

-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient

Key Tip:

This tense will always retain the full "r" sound from the infinitive before the endings (e.g., je changerais).

The Rule: Find the present ils/elles stem, drop -ent, then add subjunctive endings:

je -e, tu -es, il/elle/on -e, nous -ions, vous -iez, ils/elles -ent

Key Tip:

For regular -er verbs, the singular subjunctive conjugations are spelled exactly the same as the present indicative conjugations.

4. Changer (to change)

Je / J' change ai changé changeais vais changer changerai changerais que je change

3. Regular -IR Verbs

Regular -ir Verbs (Finir Type) Conjugation Guide (by Tense)

The Rule: Drop the -ir ending to find the stem, then add standard regular endings:

je -is nous -issons
tu -is vous -issez
il / elle / on -it ils / elles -issent
Key Tip:

Look for the -iss- extension in all plural forms (nous, vous, ils/elles). If a verb does not take -issons in the plural (like venir or partir), it is an irregular third-group verb masquerading as an -ir verb.

The Rule: Conjugate the auxiliary verb avoir in the present tense + add the past participle ending in -i.

Example: j'ai fini, tu as fini...

Key Tip:

Drop the -ir from the infinitive and replace it with -i to form the past participle (e.g., finirfini).

The Rule: Use the present-tense nous stem (ending in -iss-) + add imperfect endings:

je -issais, tu -issais, il -issait, nous -issions, vous -issiez, ils -issaient

Key Tip:

The signature -iss- extension carries through all subject pronouns in the imperfect conjugation (e.g., je finissais).

The Rule: Present tense of aller + the full infinitive of the main verb.

Example: je vais finir, tu vas finir...

Key Tip:

The main verb does not conjugate or alter its spelling in this tense, just keep its infinitive intact.

The Rule: Use the full infinitive as the stem, then add future endings:

je -ai, tu -as, il/elle/on -a, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ont

Key Tip:

The simple future stem for regular -ir verbs is simply the infinitive (e.g., finir-).

The Rule: Use the future stem (infinitive) + add the imperfect endings:

-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient

Key Tip:

This conditional tense retains the full infinitive stem with the trailing "r" sound before endings (e.g., je finirais).

The Rule: Find the present ils/elles stem (ends in -iss-), drop -ent, then add endings:

je -isse, tu -isses, il -isse, nous -issions, vous -issiez, ils -issent

Key Tip:

The -iss- suffix is consistently present across all pronouns in the subjunctive conjugation.

Ils / Elles choisissent ont choisi choisissaient vont choisir choisiront choisiraient qu'ils/elles choisissent

4. Regular -RE Verbs

Regular -re Verbs (Vendre Type) Conjugation Guide (by Tense)

The Rule: Drop the -re ending to find the stem, then apply these endings:

je -s nous -ons
tu -s vous -ez
il / elle / on (none) ils / elles -ent
Key Tip:

Pay close attention to the third-person singular (il/elle/on). Unlike -er and -ir verbs which retain a vowel suffix, regular -re verbs stop dead at the stem (e.g., il attend).

The Rule: Conjugate the auxiliary verb avoir in the present tense + add the past participle ending in -u.

Example: j'ai attendu, tu as attendu...

Key Tip:

Drop the -re from the infinitive and replace it with -u to form the past participle (e.g., attendreattendu).

The Rule: Find the present-tense nous form, drop -ons to get the stem, then add imperfect endings:

je -ais, tu -ais, il/elle/on -ait, nous -ions, vous -iez, ils/elles -aient

Key Tip:

Formed regularly from the present nous stem (e.g., nous attendonsj'attendais).

The Rule: Present tense of aller + the full infinitive of the main verb.

Example: je vais attendre, tu vas attendre...

Key Tip:

The main verb remains unconjugated in the infinitive (e.g. attendre).

The Rule: Use the infinitive minus the final -e as the stem, then add endings:

je -ai, tu -as, il/elle/on -a, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ont

Key Tip:

Be sure to drop the final silent -e from the infinitive before adding endings (e.g., attendreattendr-).

The Rule: Use the future stem (infinitive minus -e) + add the imperfect endings:

-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient

Key Tip:

Just like the simple future, you must drop the final silent -e before adding imperfect endings (e.g., j'attendrais).

The Rule: Find the present ils/elles stem, drop -ent, then add subjunctive endings:

je -e, tu -es, il/elle/on -e, nous -ions, vous -iez, ils/elles -ent

Key Tip:

The singular subjunctive endings (-e, -es, -e) are added directly to the verb stem (e.g., que j'attende).
